You could build roads and railways, set up your transports properly so that you could shift whole armies immediately from one side of the world to the opposite. Since it's all hexes now, you could still do that with a-w-e-d-x-z, if they had thought about it. You could move units rapidly with a keypress. They had the balance right between costs and benefits. It had relatively few features, by today's standards, but then it was running on an atari ST with 1mb RAM, and the whole game ran off I think four floppy discs. There's just something painfully awkward about the game. They've even taken out 'c' to centre on the active unit. maybe that's a nice idea, but the rest of the game is swimming in so much awkward that I can't tell.

The tech tree requires more study to see how you can get anywhere and frankly doesn't seem to reward that study oh yeah, civics. The religion thing is worse the trade stuff is worse the policies things that they seem to have got from awful card-based table games is just lame, and that in turn makes the governments worse. Takes so long to build and move units that they're obsolete by the time they arrive.

It feels much more for-kids than 5, which was more for-kids than 4. Capturing anything is a massive pain in the backside. I mean the suzerain thing is a nice idea, it's just so cumbersome in execution. You can't even build your way out of it, because you get limited with your number of districts. The housing and amenity stuff, just clunky and awkward.

The fact it drags you back to units which have no viable moves before letting you end the turn. The fact you need 2-3 units to clear a barbarian outpost, and it takes them so much longer to get there. It's just so fricking cumbersome, in every respect. Something that costs ВЈ50 ought to be good, and if it isn't, why should I expect that chucking another ВЈ25 or however much will fix things? Then I will have wasted ВЈ75Д¬umbersome. Maybe they will fix things with expansions, tough в™Ґв™Ґв™Ґв™Ґ, if they don't make the core game any better I ain't gonna buy them. Seem to be forgetting that updates have only been around at all since maybe 4. By the time I got it the vanilla version was good enough to make me buy one or two expansions, and then the mod support was amazing. I held off Civ V for a long time after release, because I was pissed off about 1upt. In fact I think that game was so good that the kosher Civilization team freaked out and disowned it as hard as they could, and refused to ever pick up any of the innovations it contained. I remember either 2 or 3 stunk but I can't remember which Call to Power was great, all sorts of sleek new ideas, including the trade route system, the underwater and flying cities, the future, and ideas which were genuinely funny, like the VW beetle hippy terrorist unit. Civ I was literally the game I got addicted to games on. I've played all of them except Revolution (well, I played a version on my phone about 3 times). I've got to say at this point, I'm certainly no fan of 6.
